Ohio State is offering a summer workshop to train participants on effective ways to teach argumentation in middle and high school classrooms. Rather than being the domain of English language arts teachers, argumentative writing should be a skill built across all disciplines. At the same time, inertia on acceptance of climate change, in the face of overwhelming evidence, suggests that individuals need to better learn, at a young age, how to craft and evaluate claims based on evidence and reasoning. Teams of teachers from the same building or district are encouraged to attend! * Dates and Times: Monday, June 12 to Thursday, June 15, 2017 • 8:00 am to 3:30 pm * Location: Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, The Ohio State University 1090 Carmack Road, Columbus, Ohio 43210 (West Campus) * Registration Deadline: Preference given to those who register and pay by May 25, 2017 The workshop will be divided into three distinct segments; these segments will provide participants with a foundation for teaching argumentative writing, an opportunity to deploy the skills learned, and a development period to create instructional materials specific to their content areas and courses taught. The cost of attendance per participant will be $40 with costs of learning materials, parking and lunches included. Tours of the Byrd Center Archives and the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center are part of the summer experience. Quotes from Past Participants: "Honestly, I thought the active workshop was very, very useful. Not only did I learn evidence-warrant claim better, I learned to use primary source documents for inquiry." “It was great to see and experience the process of activities done with us that are done with students. I feel like I can make immediate additions to my curriculum due to the way the instructors modeled the technique.” “Actually taking evidence and incorporating the concept of warrants taught me to help students make specific claims. Overall, I loved my time spent here this week!” Register Here: http://tinyurl.com/lov9ag7   Lodging Information (for those attending from outside of Central Ohio): A block of rooms has been set aside for June 11 - June 16, 2017 at the Hilton Garden Inn Columbus-University Area (rate of $119/night + tax).
