Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center (BPCRC) Development/Endowment Funds
Please support the important activities of the BPCRC. There are several funds described below to which you might make a contribution. To make an online donation, please click on the fund of interest below:
Our current ice storage freezers maintain the collection of ice cores recovered from glaciers around the world at –30ºF. These freezers have been in operation since 1989 and are currently at capacity. A 2016 feasibility study conducted by SHP Leading Design recommends renovation of the existing freezers as well as the phased addition of 4 freezers that will utilize more modern technologies and efficiencies. This will help OSU meet its sustainability goals while supporting world class research. Directed by Drs. Lonnie G. Thompson and Ellen Mosley-Thompson.
To support BPCRC education and outreach activities, including tour groups, events and activities hosted at BPCRC and visits by faculty, staff and students to give presentations at local schools. Directed by Jason Cervenec.
Supports education and outreach activities of the Polar Rock Repository. Directed by Dr. Anne Grunow.
Supporting STEM education for co-ed youth who form teams that “research a real-world engineering challenge, develop a solution, and compete with LEGO-based robots of their own design” through BPCRC FIRST LEGO League teams. FIRST = For Inspiration and Recognition of Science & Technology (http://www.firstinspires.org/). Funds used toward costs of annual team registration, LEGO robotics, competition board, software, team research materials and supplies. Directed by Dr. Bryan Mark.
Supports global climate change research, includes all aspects of ongoing research at BPCRC and may be used for travel, laboratory analysis, page or publication charges, and research facility usage. Directed by Jason Cervenec.
This fund supports the climate communication capabilities, information services, education and outreach, and research of the State Climate Office of Ohio, a collaborative venture of the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center and OSU Department of Geography. Directed by Jason Cervenec.
Support of the Third Pole Environment Office at the OSU Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center. Directed by Dr. Lonnie G. Thompson.
For support of the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center Glacier Environmental Change Group research. This includes salary for students and postdocs, travel, research equipment and upgrades as related to current and ongoing programs/projects. Directed by Dr. Bryan Mark.
Donations will provide support for student participation in scientific research with a focus on Earth's oceanic regions (salary, travel, research supplies, and publication expenses). Directed by Dr. Leonid Polyak.
Donations will support enhancement and preservation of the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center Archival Program Collection. Visit our Polar Archives website for more information.
Supports ongoing BPCRC research needs, BPCRC hosted workshops/conferences and Polar Library acquisitions. Directed by BPCRC administration.
Established February 2, 2007 with gifts from the Byrd Polar Research Center, Alma and James Chaney, and numerous others in memory of Dr. E. Richard (Rick) Toracinta; used to provide annual scholarship awards to graduate students studying atmospheric science with preference given to students specializing in severe weather (thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes), polar meteorology or polar climatology. Directed by Dr. David Bromwich.
Supports general undergraduate research (travel, fieldwork and laboratory expenses) in climate/environmental/physical science research endeavors consistent with the mission of BPCRC. Directed by BPCRC administration.
To support the scientific research of the BPCRC Ice Core Paleoclimate Research Group. Provides support for ice core drilling projects, ice core analyses, student participation in the research, and long term storage of the ice. Directed by Drs. Lonnie G. Thompson and Ellen Mosley-Thompson.
This fund will support scholarly and research activities of the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center Polar Meteorology Group. Funds will be used for staff travel, page charges, personnel, student support and supplies. Directed by Dr. David Bromwich.
Support for students, researchers (current students, visiting researchers and postdocs) to perform paleoclimatological, glacialogical and environmental Alpine related research. This includes salary, travel, research supplies and field related expenses. Directed by BPCRC administration.
For support of the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center Satellite Hydrology Group research. This will include salary, travel, research equipment and upgrades as related to current and ongoing programs/projects. Directed by Professor Doug Alsdorf.
Provides support for SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research) activities and functions that run through the OSU Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center as directed by Professor Terry J. Wilson.
For support of the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center Glacier Dynamics Group research. This includes salary for students and postdocs, travel, research equipment and upgrades as related to current and ongoing programs/projects. Directed by Professor Ian Howat.
