Meet the Panelists

Laura Kissel

Laura Kissel is the Polar Curator for the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center Archival Program (Polar Archives), a position that she has held since 1996. Laura's primary responsibilities involve assisting students, scholars and other researchers in using the many collections held by the Polar Archives that document the history of polar exploration.

Emilie Beaudon

Dr. Emilie Beaudon is a postdoctoral researcher in the Byrd Center's Ice Core Paleoclimatology Research Group. In 2005 she held the position of manager of the glaciology laboratory at the Dumont D’Urville station for the 55th French overwintering mission in Adélie Land (Antarctica). Her research focuses on the determining changes in pollution transport pathways to remote areas of the globe. 

Sheldon Bart

Sheldon is the author of Race to the Top of the World: Richard Byrd and the First Flight to the North Pole. He is also the president and founder of Wilderness Research Foundation (WRF) and led the 1996 American Expedition to Baffin Island in the Canadian Eastern Arctic. 

Anneke Schwob 

Anneke Schwob is the winner of the 2019-2020 Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center Archival Program (BPCRCAP) research award. Dr. Schwob is a Teaching Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina whose research interests include American literature and science, the birth of American conservation movements, periodical studies, and natural history. 

Stacy Porter

Stacy Porter is a postdoctoral researcher at the Byrd Center's Ice Core Paleoclimatology Research Group and a member of the Education and Outreach Department. Stacy will be moderating the Q&A during the panel discussion.
