Henry Brecher of the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center will discuss his experience overwintering in Antarctica. Henry wintered at Byrd Station as an aurora observer from November 1959 to November 1960. In December 1960 and January 1961, he participated in the tractor train traverse from Byrd Station to Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, the first U.S. party to travel to the South Pole over the ice. After completion of that trip he returned to Byrd Station briefly in January 1961 to help in the construction of an aurora observation substation to be occupied in the following winter.
