A remote summer REU will be offered by the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center at The Ohio State University working on the Fluid Earth Viewer web application (https://fever.byrd.osu.edu/). Fluid Earth Viewer was developed with NSF-funding to allow youth and families to explore current and past conditions of Earth’s atmosphere and oceans. Opportunities include creating code for new features, optimizing code to run efficiently on various platforms, developing workflows to export and embed visualizations, offering feedback on the user interface, and creating educational tools for youth and educators. Undergraduate students with backgrounds in fields such as atmospheric sciences, Earth sciences, geography, GIS, and computer programming are invited to apply for full and part time REUs. Applicants should have at least some experience with computer programming but extensive experience is not required. An ability to clearly communicate and willingness to learn new skills and tackle challenges is required.

The Byrd Center team will work with participants to create a manageable and flexible portfolio of project work to complete over the summer that will increase knowledge and skills. While in-person interactions will not be possible, the team will use a number of virtual tools to remain connected and participants will receive mentoring, experiences with different programming languages and data formats, chances to interact with many Byrd Center researchers, and an invitation to present to the center’s research community. The Byrd Center team will work to support the IT needs of participants from wherever they are teleworking.

The team anticipates a 10-week, paid REU starting in mid to late June 2020.
