Austin is interested in how climate signals are preserved in glacial ice, especially in the high-mountain regions of the tropics. His primary research focus is on determining the influences of the Amazon Basin on the atmospheric transport of dust and how precipitation affects oxygen isotope ratios over tropical South America. Through his analyses he seeks to enhance our understanding of the climatological importance of the Amazon on decadal to millennial time scales.
